("Tape ARchive", following {ar}) {Unix}'s
general purpose {archive} utility and the file format it uses.
Tar was originally intended for use with {magnetic tape} but,
though it has several {command line options} related to tape,
it is now used more often for packaging files together on
other media, e.g. for distribution via the {Internet}.

The resulting archive, a "tar file" (humourously, "tarball")
is often compressed, using {gzip} or some other form of
compression (see {tar and feather}).

There is a {GNU} version of tar called {gnutar} with several
improvements over the standard versions.

{Filename extension}: .tar

{MIME type}: unregistered, but commonly application/x-tar

{Unix manual page}: tar(1).

Compare {shar}, {zip}.

  • Shell command to tar directory excluding certain files folders

  • what does -zxvf mean in tar -zxvf lt;filename gt;? [closed]
This old way of writing 'tar' options can surprise even experienced users For example, the two commands: tar cfz archive tar gz file tar -cfz archive tar gz file are quite different The first example uses 'archive tar gz' as the value for option 'f' and recognizes the option 'z'
  • linux - tar: add all files and directories in current directory . . .
Had a similar situation myself I think it is best to create the tar elsewhere and then use -C to tell tar the base directory for the compressed files Example: tar -cjf workspace tar gz -C <path_to_workspace> $(ls -A <path_to_workspace>) This way there is no need to exclude your own tarfile As noted in other comments, -A will list hidden files

The GNU tar program does not know how to compress an existing file such as user-logs tar (bzip2 does that) The tar program can use external compression programs gzip, bzip2, xz by opening a pipe to those programs, sending a tar archive via the pipe to the compression utility, which compresses the data which it reads from tar and writes the

  • What is the difference between tar and zip? [closed]
tar in itself just bundles files together (the result is called a tarball), while zip applies compression as well Usually you use gzip along with tar to compress the resulting tarball, thus achieving similar results as with zip For reasonably large archives there are important differences though A zip archive is a collection of compressed files
  • How to tar certain file types in all subdirectories?
If you want to produce a zipped tar file ( tgz) and want to avoid problems with spaces in filenames: find \( -name \* php -o -name \* html \) -print0 | xargs -0 tar -cvzf my_archive tgz The -print0 “primary” of find separates output filenames using the NULL ( \0 ) byte, thus playing well with the -0 option of xargs , which appends its
